America recently ended its longest war in history, ending 20 years of conflict in Afghanistan. Now, as Russia has invaded Ukraine, calls are growing for America to intervene. I urge you to exercise and encourage restraint as America responds to Russia’s immoral invasion of Ukraine.

We should avoid actions that may aggravate the situation further or have damaging repercussions to American prosperity. Increasing sanctions, funding and arming a Ukrainian insurgency, and the establishment of a no-fly zone are precipitous and can unnecessarily risk pulling the U.S. into direct confrontation with Russia.

The United States has no vital national interests at stake in Ukraine. The cost in American lives and resources to fight on Ukraine’s behalf against another nuclear-armed power would be immense – and worse, it would only serve to make our nation less safe.

I urge you to do everything in your power to foster diplomacy and peace -- and in a worst-case scenario to ensure that our nation’s military is not involved.

As the world watches Russia’s unjust and deplorable invasion of Ukraine, many have asked what role the United States’ Armed Forces might play in a conflict between these nations. While the situation is tragic, it’s important Americans and their leaders consider the full scope and implications of taking actions that further enmesh the United States in Ukraine.

Our actions in Ukraine have repercussions at home and should be soberly measured against our interests. Harsher sanctions will hurt Russia. They will also cost Americans through higher energy costs and increased inflation. More American arms shipments to Ukraine will bleed Russia while also risking drawing the U.S. and its NATO allies further into the conflict. Similarly, hysterical calls for extreme measures such as the declaration of a no-fly zone over Ukraine or NATO airstrikes against advancing Russian troops should be ignored. Such reckless moves would dramatically aggravate the situation by putting the United States into direct conflict with Russia.

At its core, this crisis is a European security issue best addressed by wealthy and capable European countries. These states can and should shoulder more of their collective defense burden. This action is long overdue and should lessen the burden traditionally borne by the American taxpayer and our troops.
