Close the door on the Iraq War

20 years later, Congress must end the war authorization

Dear Representative:

As your constituent, I urge you to press for a standalone floor vote to vote YES on the House version of Senate bill S.316, seeking to repeal the outdated 1991 and 2002 Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMFs) in Iraq. I believe this is an opportunity for a historic course correction in U.S. foreign policy, reasserting Congress's constitutional authority in matters of war and peace, while ensuring greater accountability and transparency in military actions.

The 20th anniversary of the Iraq War has passed, and the Gulf and Iraq War AUMFs have lost their relevance. Targeting a regime that no longer exists, it is evident that these authorizations do not reflect the current reality in Iraq. By repealing these outdated AUMFs, we can finally close an open-ended justification that past administrations have exploited to carry out military actions in Iraq without adequate congressional oversight.

As my voice in Congress, I am asking you to fulfill your constitutional duty in determining when and why we deploy American troops to defend our country. The repeal of the Iraq AUMFs is a significant step towards ending flawed strategies and unnecessary wars in the Middle East. By supporting this bill, you will demonstrate a commitment to our Constitution and your constituents by charting a more prudent and relevant foreign policy approach.

Our large-scale military involvement in the Middle East is unnecessary — unrelated to our current strategic challenges and a drain on our military readiness and national security posture.

Yet the decades-old authorizations for these conflicts remain active, allowing administrations to send troops to these regions with minimal involvement from our Congress and little accountability to the American people. They should be repealed.

In March, House leadership committed to a vote on ending these Authorizations in the fall. When Congress returns this month it’s time to follow through on these promises. Our elected representatives need to be the voice of the American people in matters of war and peace, ensuring our country fights only the wars that are necessary to keep us safe — now and into the future.

Sign the letter and tell Congress and especially your Representatives to repeal these outdated authorizations and honor the sacrifices of our troops by upholding their Constitutional duty in matters of war and peace!
